Our family does an activity called "Geocaching" . This involves using a GPS device, and by getting information from the Geocaching website, finding "treasures" in local areas.
We have been doing this a while now, and really enjoy it a lot. Some of the caches are really tiny, small items with just enough room in them for a rolled up piece of paper to log your find on. Some caches are quite large, like ammo boxes, filled with trinkets that you can trade out when you find it.
This weekend we found several micro sized caches - a couple smallish ones, and one larger one that had trinkets in it. The girls, Daryl and I hiked, bushwhacked, and walked through streams to find the caches. It's a lot of fun. I am not a big outdoor person, but I love the thrill of the hunt! I have to restrain myself from announcing "I found it" sometimes, and give the kids a chance to locate the caches. But if we have been searching and searching and no one has found, then I don't feel quite so guilty when I do get to say "I FOUND IT!".. Jessie has eagle eyes, she sees them when we look right past them sometimes.
But it was a lot of fun. If you have a gps, go to Geocaching.com and put in your home address, and just SEE how many hidden treasures there are in your area!! We loaded over 100 into our GPS this weekend, and those were all in a 3 mile radius of our home. So you can have great fun and not go far from home at all!! And you get to see areas, and things you might not normally explore!
Oh, and I have to share how totally obsessive my hubby is about weeds - at a PARK, that is pretty well kept up, he saw a couple of those dandelion weeds, and just could NOT resist the urge to kneel down and pull them out...
What a dork :) But we love him, weed obsession and all!!!
I clicked on the link, and it took me to geocoaching.com instead. I took out the "o" and it went to the right place - http://www.geocaching.com/
ReplyDeleteJust thought you'd want to know.

I discovered this website over the summer and really want to try it, but we don't have a GPS. I know you don't have to have one. It's something I hope we do soon. There is lots in our area.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, Stephanie. A friend of mine is an active geocache enthusiast, and has invited me to go along with him. Thanks to you, I'm going to take him up on his offer. What a great family activity!
