not just any part of Alaska, because it's a huge state, and most of it, is pretty isolated. But i want to go to Kodiak. I lived there from June 1969, to August, 1972, and have the absolutely best memories of my childhood there.

I found this in an article about Kodiak tonight - (I was actually looking up information about the Kodiak Brown bear, and came across this little blurb)

Kodiak Island is sometimes called “Alaska’s Emerald Isle.” With knobby mountains, countless waterfalls, finger lakes, and deep narrow inlets, it could well be called Neverland, for it is the place of fantasy. After Hawaii, it is the second largest island in the United States, 3,800 square miles largely devoted to the vast National Wildlife Refuge. With 117 salmon streams, 14 major watersheds, and less than 100 miles of road, it is the perfect place for the Kodiak Bear.
I just really want to go there. I want my kids to see real snow, and beautiful landscapes, and moose, and Pushki, and all the beautiful sights there are in Alaska..

But i know it's a dream, and I will probably never again in my life get to visit what I consider my "magic kingdom"... I loved Alaska, I LOVED Kodiak, I loved the wharf, the town, the beautiful old Russian Orthodox church, with its gold top, and blue paint. I loved the mountains, the long drives to go fishing, or camping... I just loved Kodiak.
The photos included here are ones from old OLD slides my dad took when I was a young child, my sister scanned them after my parents both died, there are some that were dusty, and so they don't look quite so beautiful, but this is My dream...
Oh, these pictures are beautiful! My husband has always wanted to go to Alaska. I have always thought how wonderful it would be to surprise him with that trip! It is certainly only a dream for us right now as well.
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you it is so funny to me to have someone say they are inspired by ME to get outside more! I am SO not an outside person. But I am enjoying our nature study group and its holding me accountable to doing something I think is important, but have a hard time with.
